An indigo dyeing workshop that coexists with its natural island surroundings

Shimaai Farm is an indigo dyeing workshop on Ishigaki Island, which handles everything from the cultivation of raw materials to dye processing. The indigofera suffruticosa plants (commonly called Guatemalan or West Indian indigo), which serve as the raw material for indigo dye, are cultivated with great loving care, and without the use of chemical fertilizers or herbicides. The dyers emphasize the use of traditional methods passed down since olden times, and devote a great deal of time and effort to dying various materials (such as cloth and leather) in a shade of blue that is suggestive of the blue skies and oceans of Okinawa. Visitors can also purchase bags, accessories and other dyed goods featuring highly refined designs.
